What is Rheumatology? 

Rheumatology is a medical specialty that focuses on caring for diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system includes your bones, joints, muscles, and soft tissues. Many rheumatic diseases are autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune diseases happen when your body mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. The result is inflammation, pain, and other symptoms.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is a frontline, dynamic, non-invasive, powerful and painless tool used to provide real-time images of muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and cartilage throughout the body. MSK ultrasound is particularly helpful in the diagnosis of conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, pseudogout, bursitis, and tendonitis. Ultrasound may provide information that cannot be detected by any other imaging method. It is radiation-free and has no side effects. MSK ultrasound is also used by our providers to guide injections and procedures because it allows for real-time visualization of the joint and soft tissue. 
 

How Do I Prepare for the Exam?

No special preparation is needed. You may be asked to change into a gown before the ultrasound exam. 
 

During the Exam

A small amount of gel will be applied to the area being examined. The provider will then glide the ultrasound transducer over your skin to capture images of the tissues below. We may ask you to move the joint or limb being examined to evaluate the function of ligaments, tendons, muscles, and joints. An ultrasound exam is typically painless, and takes between 15 to 30 minutes to complete. 
 

Are There Any Risks? 

Ultrasound has no known risks or side effects. 
 

After the Exam

After the exam, you can immediately resume your normal activities. Your Rheumatologist will discuss the ultrasound results with you right after the exam.
