The application submission peroid is now CLOSED for The Foundation's 2013 Health Career Scholarships and the Greg Smajda Memorial Healthcare Scholarship. Check back in January 2014 for our new applications.

Each year The Foundation awards over 30 Health Career scholarships and one Greg Smajda Memorial scholarship.
The Health Career scholarships are available to area students who have chosen to go into selected health care professions and meet scholastic and financial need requirements. The Greg Smajda scholarship is only available to undergraduates in a healthcare field who work for, or are associated with, Mon General Hospital.

To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must be a resident of Monongalia, Marion, Taylor, Preston, Wetzel, Harrison, or Tucker counties in West Virginia, or Fayette or Greene counties in Pennsylvania. Full and part-time employees of Mon Health System and their children are eligible regardless of residence.

Eligible career fields that qualify a student for scholarship consideration in a one or two year program are: Associate in Nursing, Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic, Registered Radiology Technologist, Dietetic Technician, Health Information Technology, Licensed Practical Nurse, Medical Laboratory Technician, Radiologic Technologist, Registered Respiratory Therapist, and Ultrasound Technologist.

Eligible career fields for the three, four, or more year degrees are Pharmacy, Nursing-BSN, Nursing-Diploma, Nurse Practitioner, Dietitian, Physician Assistant, Medical Technologist, and Ultrasound Technologist.

Application deadline is March 15.   For more information or an application, call The Foundation at (304) 598-1337 or email us at harnd@monhealthsys.org.  Applications may also be obtained at The Foundation office at Mon General Hospital or the hospital’s Human Resources Department.

High school seniors, current college students, and non-traditional students are encouraged to apply. Non-traditional students are defined as having been out-of-school for three or more years at the time of application. Each Health Career scholarship is worth $1,000 per school year.  Each Greg Smajda scholarship is worth $500 per school year.

Scholarship selection will be based on the application letter, academic performance, and financial need. The scholastic minimums are waived for non-traditional students. The scholarships are for tuition, room and board, books, and lab fees.  Scholarship winners will be notified in April.

The Health Career Scholarship Program was created by The Foundation in 1991 to promote health care careers in fields with projected worker shortages in the Morgantown area. Selection is made by a sub-committee of the Board of Directors of The Foundation.

The Greg Smajda Memorial Healthcare Scholarship was established in May 2000 in memory of Greg Smajda, a supervisor in Sterile Processing at Mon General Hospital, who died unexpectedly in the fall of 1999.    Greg Smajda Memorial Scholarship applications are also available in the Mon General Foundation and Human Resources departments.
