Job SummaryUnder general direction, responsible for collecting and labeling appropriate blood specimens from outpatients in a timely manner. Maintains established processes for record retention and retrieval and distribution of test results. Registers patient following established policies, obtains ICD9 Codes and/or ABN's. Complies with MGH Laboratory policies and procedures plus CAP and federal/state regulations. Maintains established processes for record retention and retrieval and distribution of test results.
Job Requirementsa. Minimum Education Requirement : Must possess basic reading, writing and mathematical skills and ability to understand written and verbal instructions and transmit information normally acquired through attainment of a high school diploma or equivalency (GED). Successful completion of a phlebotomy-training program (i.e. phlebotomy school or medical assistant program). Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, ASCP, or NCA is preferred. A minimum of two years full time phlebotomy experience may be considered in place of an approved training program.
b. Minimum Experience Requirement : Must successfully complete internal phlebotomy examination during probationary period. Demonstrate proficiency in typing/data entry and the ability to learn Laboratory Information System normally acquired through specialized training or through previous experience. Effective interpersonal communication skills in order to acquire needed information to maintain cooperative working relationships with patients and ancillary departments, physicians' offices, department personnel, administrative staff and department managers. Basic computer literacy and familiarity with medical terminology and medical coding normally acquired through previous training and/or experience is preferred.
c. Minimum License Requirement : Must possess valid driver's license in order to drive for the health system to collect and pick up specimens from outside facilities as needed.
Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions
Light Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to10 lbs with a maximum lifting of 25 lbs.
